Here's what readers are saying about My Name is Big
"I read this book quite by accident. A friend gave it to me and while I was eating lunch one day, I casually read the first few pages and was hooked by this big ugly dog's story. Anyone who is a dog lover will fall in love with Big." - Andrew C. Palmer
"A very quick (too quick!) read. I love Laz's style. If you are looking for one of those annoyingly cloying books about a cutesy dog, try something else. If you want gritty realism, try something else. If you want a delightfully droll read, then settle in for a very pleasant time. I'm going to make this my go-to book when gifting people who like animals." - Mary L. Herrick
"I had a hard time putting [the book] down. Written in a unique style, this is a book that dog people, runners, walkers, and everybody else with a heart will enjoy." - Harald Vaessin "HEFV"
Bestseller!
The big ugly dog had been abandoned and shot. Nearing the end, he crawled off into the woods to die. That is where I found him.
Having been taught as a child that it was wrong to leave animals to suffer, I took him to the house with no other intention than to see that he was humanely put out of his misery. Rather than the end of the big dog's adventures, it was only the beginning.
Fate had brought us together, destiny was determined to keep us that way. I kept thinking I had sent him away for the last time, but Big kept finding his way back. Even when his journey took him hundreds of miles away, somehow he always ended up at our little house in the woods.
He started out as "that big dog." He became "the Big Dog." There couldn't be a more appropriate name, for a Big Dog, with a Big Personality.
Lessons from the Big
Lazarus Lake learned a lot between the day he first saw him, and the day when Big was finally accepted as a permanent member of the family. You can enjoy the adventure right along with him by following his journey in real time.
- He learned about not judging a book by its cover.
- He learned about the power of a positive attitude.
- He learned that a dog can have a sense of humor.
- Most important, he learned that a lot of love can hide inside a Big Dog as long as you give yourself a chance to see it.
WARNING Don't forget to check the clock when you sit down with this book...each short chapter only takes a moment to read, but you can find yourself reading another and another and another before you know it because it's impossible not to get sucked into the story!

My Name is Big The Big Dog Diaries Book 1 edition by Lazarus Lake Betsy Julian Blaine Moore Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews
This book is a wonderful collection of short episodes, some of which are told from the point of view of a dog, and most of which are told from the point of view of the man who gave the dog a chance, and then a home. The character development is excellent. By the time you finish the book, you feel like you know both the dog (and the author) fairly well. As a city dweller, I found myself fascinated by the settings described in the stories, and the differences in rural Tennessee and Chicago, where I live. I think I learned some things. But more importantly, I very much enjoyed reading the book, and I certainly hope that I have not heard the last of "big."
At first I was astounded by this dogs extremely rough beginning. That is what convinced me to buy the book. I loved the diary entrys so much I would catch myself not being able to wait until I could start reading them again. The humor was wonderful. For all dog lovers, especially pitbull owners, you could envision being there. Before I finished I was looking for the next publication. I ordered part 2 in paperback and can't wait to get it.
I was one of the lucky ones who was a member of the Ultra List when laz made his first 'big post.' I've saved every one of them, read and re-read many of them, read them aloud to my family, forwarded them to my daughter in college (who I still expect to hitchhike to Tennessee just so she can get to laz's farm and pet big, and now (finally!) I have my copy of the collection in book form. It is just what I was hoping it would be and I am completely enjoying reading them again.
As others have said, laz's writing style is unorthodox (and when you read it you will understand why I call him 'laz' rather than 'Laz') but once you grow familiar with it, it's like sitting around a campfire listening to your favorite uncle tell his best stories. And this is a story that has the power to move total strangers across the country to come together to help a dog (and his 'owner') who most of them have never even met.
This story is special. You will not regret buying it.
This is the story of how ultramarathon runner and race director Lazarus Lake rescued a pit bull he named Big. The book arrived at my house one evening and I read it in its entirety that night - I simply couldn't put it down. Laz has a unique writing style, but there's no doubt he is an excellent storyteller, and what do all want at the end of the day but a great story? I also like the fact that purchasing the book helps support the Big dog, who has gained quite a following in the ultra community. Help the Big dog rescue his family - buy the book!
A very quick (too quick!) read. I love Laz's style. Another review called him 'droll,' and that's the perfect word for it. If you are looking for one of those annoyingly cloying books about a cutesy dog, try something else. If you want gritty realism, try something else.
If you want a delightfully droll read, then settle in for a very pleasant time.
I'm going to make this my go-to book when gifting people who like animals.
I am not an avid reader, not by a long shot. I have a very soft spot for pit bulls, even tho I am highly allergic. I came across this book for my kindle completely by accident and I'm so glad! I couldn't put it down. It is written with such love and understanding, something that is so unique. If all pet owners/rescuers/etc were like this guy, it would be an amazing place for all animals, a MUST READ! I just started the 2nd book and already look forward to #4 becoming available, thank you so much!!!!!!!!
Laz is a terrific storyteller. He's droll, witty and plainspoken. His unexpected writing style is more free verse than prose. And I don't think the shift key works on his keyboard because there's not an upper case letter to be found.
The book is a collection of posts to an old fashioned email list -- like an early 90's style bulletin-board that serves a community of ultra-marathon runners. Each post or poem is a complete story in its own right. The collection makes fine read and also offers a glimpse into the world of ultra-runners.
The posts chronicle the adventures of Laz and "big" -- a neglected and abandoned pit bull that shows up half starved and shot on Laz's farm in Tennessee. Though he has a frightening appearance, it turns out that big is a good natured genius with a diabolical sense of humor.
This is not a dopey story of humanized animals. Laz's sharp wit and insight into canine personalities brings a very entertaining perspective to this unique story. Highly recommended for adults and kids.
