I listen to Dave Ramsey and love his teaching style. I have always thought, "Now that I am debt free, now what? What are the next steps??" This book was just that for me. A step by step guide for understanding investing. His advice in this book was mature, easy to understand, fact based and EXACTLY what I was looking for. He gives great conservative advice on investing that he backs up with research and data. He taught me important things to look for in investments to stay out of fee traps that take a lot away from earnings. This is a book that I would like each of my children to read. 99 Minute Millionaire The Simplest and Easiest Book Ever on Getting Started Investing and Becoming Rock Star Rich (Audible Audio Edition) Scott Alan Turner LLC Turner Solutions Books Reviews
This book is an easy read for market investors or "wanna bees" of any age and experience level. I have been in the market for over 30 years and will be making investment changes after reading this book.
Throughout the book, Scott Alan Turner draws analogies to food and money that are easily understood and keeps readers engaged.
The book educates readers on the basic concepts of investing such as the power of compound interest, the detriment of investment fees, the difference between stocks, bonds and mutual funds, asset allocation and more. It provides clear steps on investing that readers can feel confident about with the knowledge conveyed in the book.
Scott encourages starting to invest even with very little money and includes low cost resources and advice for doing so. I am buying this book for my millennial offspring.
The book is intentionally simple so as to not overwhelm. If you are not subscribed to Scott's podcast, Financial Rock Star, I recommend doing so. Episodes average 20-30 minutes and will reiterate and build on the concepts of this book. He discusses many other financial topics like paying off debt, budgeting, taxes, etc. and regularly addresses listeners financial questions that likely pertain to many listeners.
Overall, the analogies of investing to grocery shopping and the food groups is a bit tedious. However, it covers in clear simple explanations of how to invest into various types of accounts (401k plans, IRAs, regular investment accounts or brokerage accounts). The author further explains the different vehicles (such as stocks, index funds, ETFs, etc.) that can be used when funding those accounts.
He gives good sound advice for investing and references good sources. He reminds the reader that being average (in investing) is a good thing overall. He stresses the need to look forward and let your money compound over time. Finally, the author tries to steer the reader from paying too much for investing in the form of fee traps of certain investment vehicles.
I bought this book to see if the advice is grounded in sound logical advice to recommend to students and young adults just starting off saving money and understanding how to invest their excess. I am also a firm believer in the steps of Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover and staying out of debt using common sense knowledge. This book lived up to my concerns and am recommending it to many others.
Don't let the name trick you, this isn't a get-quick-rich book. It covers the basics of investing for regular people. Primarily the value of index funds, what compound interest is, and why you can't "beat the market".
If you already know that stuff this book isn't for you. It's not blazing new territory. However the author manages to explain everything very clearly with simple language and analogies. I bought this for a friend of mine who has that "investing is for smart people!" mentality. She ate this book up and finally started contributing to her IRA. (Thank God.) This book is an EXCELLENT primer for people totally ignorant about the investing world or how to financially prepare for retirement.
The only downside is the lack of originality and that I was embarrassed by the weird scammy-sounding title.
I picked this up as free book of the day, and it does what the title says. It's readable at one sitting, and I think it's a good choice for a first book on investing.
Turner does a good job of not overwhelming you with technical stuff, while giving practical advice for anyone intimidated by the thought of investing. His homely analogies to things we all know, like the grocery store, really work. I've already recommended this book to one relative who knows nothing about investing.
When you've got this one under your belt, you won't know everything, but you'll have the confidence to get started AND the knowledge to do it right. Then you'll be ready for Burton Malkiel's excellent A Random Walk Down Wall Street.
The 99 Minute Millionaire is an easy-to-read and entertaining book on passive investing (also called index investing or lazy investing). While I already understand how index-fund investing works and why it is often recommended, I still enjoyed the book.
Where Turner excels is his use of metaphors that make complicated or hard-to-explain concepts easy to understand. For example, he relates various types of grocery carts (big carts, little carts, flat carts, kid carts) to various types of investment accounts (401k plans, IRAs, regular investment accounts or brokerage accounts). Then, he explains that different types of foods (such as stocks, index funds, ETFs, etc.) can go in these types of carts.
This book is ideal for someone who is intimidated by investing and gets stuck on investing terms when reading. It may also be great for those who just want to get started in investing but need firm direction in taking basic steps.
